PART 1
  • Concentration can be described as focused attention
  • Concentration an activities makes you perform them better, faster and successfully
  • Concentration is actually mind-mastery
  • We only become conscious with our thoughts when we need to concentrate, solve a problem, study or have worries/fears
  • Main reason that concentration is so unpopular is because we link it to when we were in school and were forced to do things we didn’t enjoy such as studying, which needed concentration

The benefits of developing concentration
  • Control of thoughts
  • Peace of mind
  • Self-confidence
  • Inner strength
  • Will power
  • The ability top focus your mind
  • Better memory
  • The ability to decide and carry on your decisions
  • Better functioning in daily life, whether at home or work
  • The ability to study and comprehend more quickly
  • Stop being carried away with every passing thought
  • Freedom from needless and annoying thoughts
  • Think when you want to, about what you want to think
  • Inner happiness
  • Help in developing psychic abilities
  • More powerful and efficient creative visualisations and guided imagination
  • True meditation
  • Spiritual enlightenment

PART 2

  • Training your concentration 10 minutes a day will be good
  • You are not your mind or your thoughts, they are just a power you are using

Preliminaries before performing concentration exercises
  • Need to find a place where you can be alone and undisturbed
  • You can sit crossed legged on the floor if you can or in a chair
  • Sit with your spine erect
  • Take a few deep breaths to relax your body
  • In your mind go through each muscle group and relax them
  • You must complete the exercises in order and only move on when you can do it easily without thinking of anything else for a full clean 5 minutes
  • It is advisable to practise each exercise daily for more than one week

Concentration Exercises

Exercise 1

  • Take a book and count the words in any paragraph.  Count them again to be sure that it was correct.  Start with one paragraph and when it becomes easier count all the words on the page.  Perform the counting mentally and only with your eyes

Exercise 2
  • Count backwards in your mind from 100 to 1

Exercise 3

  • Count in your mind from 100 to 1, stopping each 3 numbers, 100, 97, 94 etc

Exercise 4

  • Choose an inspiring word or just a simple sound and repeat it silently in your mind for 5 minutes.  When it becomes easier, try 10 minutes

Exercise 5

  • Take a fruit, apple for example and look at it from all sides.  Concentrate and examine it from all angles.  Don’t think of anything but the apple.  Just look at it, see it, smell it and touch it.

Exercise 6
  • Same as exercise 5.  Only this time you visualise the fruit with your eyes closed.  Start again with exercise 5 for 5 minutes and then do exercise 6 with your eyes closed.  Try to see, feel, taste and smell the fruit.

Exercise 7

  • Take a small simple object such as a spoon, a fork or a glass. Concentrate on it and watch the object from all sides without verbalisation, that is, with no words in your mind.  Just watch the object without thinking with words about it

Exercise 8

  • Draw a small geometrical figure, about 3 inches in size, such as a triangle, a rectangle or a circle.  Paint it with any colour you wish and concentrate on it.  Only see the figure.  Do not think any words, only the figure exists.  Watch the figure in front of you and try not to strain your eyes.

Exercise 9

  • Same as 8, only this time visualise the figure with your eyes closed.  If you forget you can pen your eyes and look at your figure.

Exercise 10
  • Same as 9 but with eyes open

Exercise 11
  • Try for at least 5 minutes to stay without any thoughts
  • Secret for success is constant practise, more time you dedicate to the exercises the faster it will come

Will power and self-discipline

What are will power and self-discipline?

  • Will power is the ability to control inner unnecessary and harmful impulses
  • Self-discipline is the companion of will power.  Self-discipline gives the stamina to persevere in whatever one does.
  • If you are serious and willing, you will succeed

Developing will power and self-discipline
  • One way is to practise doing disagreeable things daily when you do something you feel lazy about or don’t like you gain inner strength

Exercises
  • They are -
    • If you’re sitting in a bus or a train, offer your seat to someone standing
    • When there is dishes to be washed, do them now and not later
    • When you come home from word, do not obey the desire to sit but instead go have a shower
    • Overcome your laziness and habits.  Convince yourself of the importance of what must be done
    • Next time you decide to say something that isn’t important, don’t say it
    • Don’t read any unimportant gossip or newspaper, even if you want too
    • Refuse to eat anything unhealthy
  • Be persistent no matter what.  Think about the important and inner strength you will gain from doing them
  • Prove you are stronger than your sub-conscious impulses, if you like orange juice, switch to apply

Advantages of possessing strong will power and self-discipline
  • When you master your mind you will enjoy peace and happiness

Freedom from thoughts – Peace of mind
  • Do not let outside circumstances decide your state of mind
  • Everyone possesses the potential to enjoy peace of mind

Thoughts and peace of mind
  • Only choose to think positive, happy and uplifting thoughts
  • Most people are enslaved by their thoughts
  • To change or stop a habit you must act consciously and attentively in a different manner

Advice for attaining inner serenity and peace of mind
  • Train your mind
  • To calm your mind when agitated.  Mentally, step back and watch your mind as if you’re looking at someone else’s mind.  This relaxes it.
  • “When the student is ready, the teacher appears”
  • Try to watch your thoughts during the day as if they were someone else’s
  • Remember –
    • You are not your mind
    • You are not your thoughts
    • You are not your ideas
    • You are not your beliefs
    • They are just instruments we use

Consciousness, awareness and being
  • Consciousness is not awareness of the body or of the emotions or thoughts, but it is the awareness of what is beyond, when these are all gone.
